3 Ways to Recognize It May Be Time to Divorce

Marriages do not necessarily break, they often erode over time. There are numerous sources of erosion, and sometimes the erosion can be so slow that one partner has not realized that divorce may be imminent. Let us take some time to review three signs that it may be time to divorce.

1. No Conflict Resolution. It can be normal to have conflict in a marriage. As John Gottman noted in his marriage research, lack of effective methods to resolve differences without injuring the relationship can lead to overall lack of communication as one or both partners end up avoiding disagreement and conflict. This often results in increasing distance between the partners.

2. Increased Focus Outside the Marriage. When a marriage stagnates, some couples compensate by finding other interests. Some put all of their energy and affection into their children so that child-centered activities become the focus of family life. Others become more involved with their careers, working late and avoiding time with their partner. As focus shifts to things outside the marriage, the glue between the partners can dissolve.

3. Emotional Disengagement, Disaffection, and Lack of Sex. Emotional intimacy, a willingness to discuss feelings with the partner, can be the foundation for intimacy generally. As emotions disengage, partners may often say that “they fell out of love” with their spouse. Without the emotional attachment and affection, sex wanes as the final indicator that the partners take no pleasure in each other.
