How you Can Help a Loved One During National Autism Acceptance Month
Did you know that, formerly referred to as “Autism Awareness Month,” the transition has been made for April to now be recognized as “Autism Acceptance Month”? While advocates remain dedicated to spreading the word about autism and how it can manifest in such a wide range of ways, the shift marks an important recognition that those impacted by autism often confront acceptance, or lack thereof, as one of the biggest barriers to thriving under a solid support system. If you have a loved one with autism, you likely have seen this first hand. As we honor and advocate National Autism Acceptance Month, let us discuss some ways that you can help a loved one with autism.
Acceptance can often start with education. Building bridges and connection often starts with education. This National Autism Acceptance Month, consider becoming an advocate and educator to bring community awareness to autism. Open communication and accurate information regarding autism can help others better understand those impacted by autism. In addition, understanding and acceptance often, if not always, go hand in hand. Education can also be important within the autism community and so providing education on autism and resources to everyone may be a good idea as well.
Another great way to help a loved one during National Autism Acceptance Month may be to help advocate for initiatives focused on promoting the hiring of individuals with autism. For instance, Hire Autism provides direct help to individuals in their job search, providing assistance during the search as well as reviewing application materials such as resumes and cover letters. You may also want to consider asking your own employer to become a Hire Autism employment partner
